Identifying A Squirrel Problem

Appearance & Habitat

The 3 types of squirrels that create major wildlife control problems include tree squirrels, ground squirrels, and flying squirrels. In some states, squirrels are classified as game animals in some states. Mostly, though, squirrels are unprotected and considered little more than nuisances.

Tree Squirrels

Tree squirrels grow to be about 1-2 feet long, including their bushy tails. Their coarse coats range in colors from gray, brown, or black. They prefer to live among hardwood or coniferous forests where the ground cover is plentiful. They create nests out of twigs and leaves.

Ground Squirrels

Ground squirrels are generally smaller than tree squirrels, with short tails and short fur. They range in appearance from reddish-gray to smoky brown and may have black spots or stripes. They create deep and extensive burrows with multiple exits, generally within open grasslands.

Flying Squirrels

The smallest of all three, flying squirrels grow between 8-10 inches long. The webs of skin between their fore and hind limbs are used for gliding from treetop to treetop. Flying squirrels are typically light brown or gray and have large eyes to help them see at night. They will create homes in crevices of trees or abandoned bird's nests.

Squirrel Damage

Squirrels damage in your home can lead to electrical fires, flooding, and more. Squirrels in the attic will chew electrical wires and pull insulation, creating a hazard for an electrical fire. Chewing through roofing materials may open the possibility for water damage and flooding. The parasites that squirrels can carry may begin infesting your home and may find you or a family pet as a new host. Squirrel damage to your home can lead to further and more expensive issues in the future.

Squirrel Mess

Squirrels are very destructive animals. When you have a squirrel inside the home, the damage and messes created will be overwhelming! Squirrels are known to pull insulation for nesting, and use a single area of your attic as a latrine. The urine stains and accumulation of droppings will be terrible to remove and create quite the animal odor in your home.
